do you anticipate will be required to succeed at WGU and achieve your goals?” That was the essay question in my entrance exam at Western Governor’s University. I thought long and hard about how to answer that question and I thought I’d share my essay with you.

That is an excellent question.

Due to some poor life choices, I’ve come to regret not continuing my education. Not pursuing a higher education has hurt me career wise, financially, and personally over the years. I intend to do something about that and it starts by my enrollment in WGU.

Given the importance of setting a good example for my daughter, as well as the importance of quality time spent with both her and my wife, one significant lifestyle change will be the commitment of at least 4 hours a day, 5 days a week to my studies while my daughter is in school. This will allow me to keep to a schedule that will not have an adverse impact on other importance aspects of life, as well as setting a great example for my daughter not just by my words, but by my actions as well.

At this point in my life, time has become shorter. And I do not wish to be defined as a smart guy who wasn’t successful. I don’t want that for myself, nor do I wish my daughter to think of me in such a fashion. I’ve come to realize the most important aspect of a parent’s job is the
example they set for their children. I have found myself lacking in that regard and attending WGU addresses that issue in a positive way.

In short, I believe the simple act of setting a scheduled daily amount of time for my studies at WGU will be the biggest lifestyle change required of me to succeed, not only in school, but in life as well. For while the career and financial benefits of successfully completing a degree program here at WGU are nothing to take for granted, the opportunity for personal growth, both as a human being and a father, far outweigh any other consideration.

After all, this isn’t just about me.

Not too bad, I think. It’s truthful and from the heart.

Going back to school is always a positive experience, because education is a never-ending process of learning.

And no one is too old to learn, and always, better late than never.

What course are you taking? I wish you well and good luck.

Thank you, Eli. I’m looking forward to the experience. If accepted, I will be enrolling in WGU’s IT program with an emphasis on security and upon completion, this will open up quite a few doors for me and my family financially. But like I indicated in my essay, I think the most important aspect is my own personal development, both as a human being and a father. Not to mention being able to document my journey here on my blog.

This is one of the most logical and nicely explained post on education I have read. Most people just iterate what others already know, but this reflects of your experience as an expert. Thanks for the tips.

Thank you very much. I always try to put some “flavor” into anything I write. Without it, I become just another “talking head”. Thanks for your comment.

I think you need to be very realistic when going after any new and sizable goal. Most things can be achieved if efoort is put in and if you don’t give up too early – sometimes big commitments are required and some sacrifices may be necessary for any major new challenge.
