More column inches have been written about the way to please the search engines and persuade them to bestow favour on your website than virtually any different internet-related topic.  However as way as I understand no-one has previously tried to understand their gender: do they behave additional like a man, or additional like a lady?  Understand their gender will surely facilitate us to realize a higher insight into a way to appeal to them.

MSN is very clear: MSN is a man.  Everything about MSN is simple: do the correct factor and you may be recognized.   Follow the recommendation of the experts and you’ll surely rank highly on MSN so long as your competitors are less diligent in this respect than you.  Smart content, relevant titles, keyword-connected metatags, loads of quality inbound links, varied keyword anchor-text, a good smattering of deep links and a #one ranking will be your reward.  I have gained #one positions on MSN for moderately competitive keywords inside per week of trying.  What you see is what you get with MSN: he is a man.

Is Yahoo a person or a lady?  I find it hard to decide.  Perhaps it is a serial transsexual, or even simply androgynous. Sometimes Yahoo is as easy as a man: do the proper thing, pay your dues and be part of the club, no complications.   This happens to me on a number of my keywords: I have followed the principles and gained my reward.  On others, apparently no additional competitive, and where I’m simply furthermore-optimized, if not better, I’m nowhere.  For these words, she is a girl, resistant to my blandishments.

On the opposite hand, Google is unquestionably all girl, with womanly wiles and deeply imbued with womanly mystery.   If you wish to penetrate deep into Google you would like to be told the art of seduction.  Is there anything on the world more frustrating than attempting to optimize your website to rank highly for a competitive keyword on Google.  Generally I think not.   She is like a girl that’s continually simply out of reach.  She will not reveal her secrets for even the largest bunch of flowers.   I know that I have the simplest content in my category, a lot of quality links, deeper links, additional varied anchor text, additional articles and a lot of of everything that is presupposed to drive positioning than any of my competitors.  By far.  Not a single one of my 5000 odd backlinks is directly reciprocated, and I have at least ten inbound links for each outbound one.   I have never purchased a text link ad, or joined a link farm.  A decent proportion of my inbound links are voluntary recognition of the price of my site by 3rd parties.   Is that this enough?  Well, yes and no. I do have the simplest positions on all the search engines, measured on average on all the keywords that I target.   But whereas my positions are undisputedly dominant in MSN, they’re only wonderful in Google.  I’m solely 2nd or third on my target words.   I do very well, however I don’t blow away the competition like I do on the others.   Google has recognized my price, somewhat, however she has not opened herself to me entirely.

Sort of a lady, she has her favourites: sites which appealed to her way back, but whose luster has long since dimmed within the eyes of the rational observer, will still be favoured with a high position.    She is also fickle.  I’ve got been attempting to build position for a single keyword for two years now.   (It’s a reasonably competitive class – around thirty six million sites feature this word.) Once I started my efforts I used to be at about 25 (by virtue of this single word being half of all the opposite keywords-phrases that I compete on).  I’ve got steadily designed anchor text links with this single word into directories, into articles, into listings on other sites.  Heaps of those links are on pages with smart PR.  Better than 80% of these links are nicely inserted into the center of well-written text.

The outcome: each few weeks I realize I have moved up to a good position: say tenth, generally even sixth or 7th.   Then, the next day, or even an hour later, I fall back to 14th or maybe 18th.   She likes me, she flirts with me often, she tolerates my company and typically I even manage to amuse her.   However just after I think I might expect a kiss in come back as my lips approach, she turns her cheek away and I’m banished to the outer circle of courtiers.  However her appeal is such that I am drawn once more into attempting to understand her mysteries.  However I feel that if I ever make it, and my lips bit hers, and he or she longs for me as I long for her, I can never be sure what it had been that I did to benefit such bliss.
