While creating a blog is a relatively simple thing to do, maintaining a successful blog is much more difficult. This is due to the fact that there are many different factors that go into the success of a blog. The subject matter of a blog, its’ popularity and even the layout of a blog can be factor in the success of a blog. How a blog is promoted and its’ ability to reach a large audience also has a profound impact on a blogs’ success. And while there’s no simple formula one can follow, there are some basic tips you can follow which can help ensure you can enjoy success with your blog.

Make Post Entries on a Regular Basis

I know I’ve said this before, but this too, bears repeating. I cannot underestimate the importance of making blog posts on a regular basis. What I’ve learned is, what ever schedule you decide on, keep to that schedule. For instance, if you decide to post on a weekly basis, then post on a weekly basis. If daily, then post daily. You do yourself and your readers a disservice when you do not keep adding fresh content regularly. Savvy blog surfers are hip to that kind of behavior and your readers aren’t likely to keep coming back if your blog has not been updated in a long period of time. What’s sure is that if your readers know you update your blog regularly, they’ll be sure to return.

I’ve read varying opinions on the subject of how long your posts should be. There are some who swear by a length of at least 250 words and there are some who swear by posts of less. Much of the debate centers on whether or not a short post is enough to keep your readers interested in what you have to say. Personally, I am of the opinion that the length of a post is less important than the content of your post. I don’t believe that readers frequent blogs solely on the basis of how long a post is. Besides, with videos becoming more and more popular, the length of a blog post is becoming more and more irrelevant. But maybe that’s just me.

Understand Your Audience

A good blogger pays attention to his/her audience by focusing on a topic or niche that they know draws a certain type of audience. By focusing their content on a specific niche, good bloggers ensure that their audience remains interested in what they have to say. Equally important, a good blogger will be aware of the types of information his/her readers seek and how his/her readers prefer to have information provided to them. Some blog surfers prefer lengthy posts, some don’t. But as I’ve already stated, the length of your post is less important than the quality of your content. However, providing content in a matter in which your readers can readily process is considered by many to be as much a factor as providing quality information.

Making changes to your Blog

As a rule, successful bloggers are very careful to make changes to their blogs and carefully evaluate how any changes they make have on the traffic they receive. It’s thought by many that this is critical due to readers not being appreciative of a change that doesn’t address concerns your readers may have. This is one unspoken rule I’ve not exactly followed, but the theory behind it is that good bloggers make only small changes incrementally as opposed to one major change, giving a blogger time to reverse a change if he/she determines said change has had an detrimental effect on traffic. It’s not been my experience that any changes I’ve made to my blog have had such an effect. In fact, quite the opposite. Nevertheless, I would not be doing you any favors if I were not to bring this to your attention. The best rule of thumb? I would say to go with your gut. If you think a change may have a not so positive effect, then you’re probably right.

That’s all for today.

I hope this finds you having a pleasant day/night.

Great post, Mike. If bloggers would only read and implement the techniques that you have outlined here, there’s no doubt that it can help ensure success with their blogs.

By the way, I have noticed lately that your topics are well-presented, your articles crisp, and you presented your subject in a clearer style. You have improved a lot as a blogger, and your blog is a valuable resource of relevant information related to marketing.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Eli. I feel that my writing has improved, in part, from a great deal of studying writing styles of other blogs like yours. I believe I’m gaining in confidence in terms of my writing and it’s showing. I think step one in building trust starts with having confidence in myself. Or maybe that’s just me. LOL! Hope this finds you well.
